HOW ROLAND ROLLS, winner of a 2013 Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Award, is a story about a wave named Roland who's afraid that, one day, when he hits the beach, his life will be over. But when he gets deep, he's struck by the notion that he's not just a wave - he's the whole big, wide ocean! The story shows humanity's interconnectedness through the metaphor of a wave in the ocean. The book is lavishly illustrated by Rob Nason, who won a Golden Reel award for his work as Art Director on the film Anastasia, as well as an Annie Awards nomination. His work on Thumbelina garnered the Hans Christian Andersen award. His cover for the inspiring grass-roots children's book, Saltwater Taffy, was nominated as Cover of the Year and was a finalist for the prestigious Benjamin Franklin award.
I love Jim Carey anyway - he sends good things into the world and shifts deeper thinking, usually via the power of a giggle. This may be a children's book, but its significance ripples warmly to all ages. The illustrations by Rob Nason are lively and fantastic, they translate seamlessly with the same richness of Mr Carey's voice, which carries itself unmistakably through the entire wonderful book. As a member of the human race, (but no psycho or theological specialist of any kind..), I would earnestly recommend this for anyone facing a knothole or enduring loss... children included. It's such a lovely perspective, sweetly told, it could do nothing but comfort. Whatever your age - grab this one. You'll find that you'll order a second because there will always be one that you'll lend to your friends. Thumbs up, Mr C - This really matters.
